I am guilty for consuming way too much coffee everyday, and although I am trying to reduce my daily intake, there are moments when I just need a cup to make all those adult things happen. Do you know what I mean? That one cup of coffee just gets me motivated enough to me thinking I can conquer the world. Yes, it's all well and good, till I start noticing my teeth take a toll on the numerous coffee cups. I am all about getting my multiple cups in, as long as I can maintain my pearly whites! So being a dentist, I thought I'd share some tips that will help you all with keeping and maintaining your teeth white and sparkly, while still indulging in your caffeine kick!
1. Avoid certain foods and drinks.
To keep your teeth white and stain free, you should try to avoid certain foods and drinks, especially tea, coffee and wine. If it is not an option, like me, maybe try reducing the amount you take to one cup a day. Also, if you can drink through a straw, which may help to prevent these staining liquids from contacting with your teeth. And a must is to always rinse your mouth after drinking these types of liquids.
2. Foods you should be consuming.
Consuming foods such as strawberries and cheese are good for your health and teeth. They contain enzymes such as malic acid and lactic acid which are known to whiten teeth naturally. Fibrous fruits and veggies such as celery are good for keeping your teeth clean and they promote gum health too.
3. Drink for strength.
Drinking plain water can be the best thing for you. Not only does it help in keeping your teeth white, it is also crucial to help with dehydration, getting that healthy skin glow and important for systemic functions. Milk is also another great liquid that helps in whitening your teeth, plus it helps in stronger bones.
4. Practice good dental hygiene.
Good dental hygiene is very important to prevent staining and discoloration. Brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once daily. Use adjunct oral aids such as mouth wash, a tongue scraper/ cleaner. A whitening toothpaste, used once or twice weekly, can also help to prevent and breakdown superficial stains. Regular visits to the dentist office and maybe consult with your dentist regarding in home or office whitening treatments can help to keep your teeth white.
