I have spent quite some time in the southern part of India, and one of the many things I learned there was about the wonderful Coco Nucifera, also commonly known as the coconut. I would try to drink as much of coconut water as I could, since the humidity and heat in southern India was so severe. It was much later on that I realized the good it was doing to my body.
Coconut water has been a new trend into a healthy lifestyle option lately, and all for good reason. It has a high content of electrolytes, which is found in many sports drinks to re-hydrate you. I can go on and on about the benefits of coconut water, but I wanted to bring something else to your attention today.
Coconut oil has a lot benefits and uses that can substitute some of our daily life routines. I am so thrilled to share these uses with you, because not only are they getting replaced with something so affordable, but also by something that is organic, which in turn means less chemicals. You'll see what I mean, just keep on reading!
1. Oil Pulling
It's an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique that can be used as an adjunct to oral hygiene routines. I actually published a paper on this topic in dental school, which I will link here, if you want to go ahead a read about it more in detail! I do practice this technique myself a few times a week. All you need is coconut oil; take a tablespoon of it and swish it around your mouth for 20 minutes. Obviously if you are a beginning, 20 minutes might seem too much. You can always start with 5 mins and work your way up!
2. Makeup Remover
I love the MAC Cleanse Off oil and even the Garnier Cleansing Oils, but lately, I have been trying to switch over to more natural products, at least the ones I use to cleanse my face. I have found that coconut oil works great against make up that is waterproof and tough to remove. I apply it directly to my face, and just massage it gently over my face with my fingers. I find that it really helps to break up the makeup and also emulsifies mascara, without it being too harsh on my skin and lashes. I wash it off with water and a cleaner to really deep clean!
3. Body Lotion
Coconut Oil is a great alternative to body lotion, lip balms and even some body oils. The fact that this product basically is multipurpose, make me very happy! I like using coconut oil at least once a week, to give myself a moisture packed treatment. I start off by applying some room temperature oil onto my lips, since I find that my lips take the longest to get moisturized and soak in the oil or any balms. I follow up with applying coconut oil all over my body, concentrating on the more rougher or dryer areas, such as my heels, elbows and knees. With whatever I have left over on my hands, I usually just rub them into my hands and cuticles.
4. Itch Relief
Since spring has officially started, I probably will be keeping a small tub of coconut oil in my bag, to apply as a itch relief aid. With all the bugs and insects, I always somehow get bit, and coconut oil is a great topical remedy for instant relief!
5. Hair Treatments
Coconut oil has been passed down many generations in India as a hair secret! Well I guess the cat's out of the bag now! Everyone and their mothers used coconut oil as a deep treatment and even as a hair frizz tamer. If the smell doesn't bother you, it is a great product to nourish your hair, especially if you are someone who uses a lot of heat and products on your hair. I personally love applying around 2-3 drops on the ends of my hair, to really prevent any damage and split ends.
So there you have it! I hope you were able to find some new uses for coconut oil! There like a million more I'm sure, but these have really worked for me! xx
